Why is a Humvee not on my list of fav 4x4?

Life is short; enjoy the great outdoors

Technically, a Humvee especially the military version is technically superior.  With aluminum engine, run flat capability, 45 degree hill climbing ability, aluminum body, 37 inches tall tires, 1.5 meters fording ability, it is not on my list.

Why:

1.  It is very expensive;

2.  The parts are hard to come by being a Mil Spec

3.  long 15 ft, as it is wide.  7 ft.  They could not make it out in tight mountain trails, streams, spaces between trees, bath tubs.

4. It seems to have very complicated drive train tech.

5.  It is heavy.  It weighs between 14,000 to 15,000 lbs.  Other 4x4 without rear cab can weigh 1/3 of that.

I would settle for the CJ, old FJ 40 and Subaru.  We bought ours for only P1.2 million.  The 2.5 liter xt that is turbo fed might be 1.6 million.

The HMMWV (Humvee)

From FAS org on Humvees

 From Military Factfiles

 From AM General - Humvee manufacturer

A site on 4x4 would not be complete without mentioning the HMMWV (High Mobility Multi -purpose Wheeled Vehicle.  It is the workhorse of modern US Army and can transport troops, be a weapons carrier, ambulance, tow vehicle.  It is  4x4 vehicle with a powerful diesel engine, equipped with AT,  2 speed transfer case, range of 500 miles, very low fuel economy, 6.5 V8  liter General Motors naturally aspirated diesel engine, l55 hp and lots of torque.  It can tow a howitzer at only 1,200 rpm

It meets the standard of trasportability (can be carried by a helicopter) can be air dropped via parachute,  and survivability.  However, it is vulnerable to RPG attacks in Iran and Afghanistan.

It is 15 ft long and  7 ft wide, 6ft tall and is therefore more stable than the M151 which it replaced. weighs 5000 lbs and capable of payloads of  2,500 (capable of twice that load for weapons carrier) road hugging and capable of speeds of 65 mph.  Comes with a 24/12 volt system.  Its tires are 37 x 12.5 with run flat capability and sometimes with option for central inflation system.

When equipped with snorkel system, it can ford up to depths of l.5 meters
