I again found in the 2009 Australian 4x4 magazine the MaxTrax.  What is MaxTrax?

It is an innovative extraction and recovery device invented by Australian 4WD enthusiasts.  It is a reliable simple but rugged system that you simply insert underneath your vehicle tires, you let your vehicle tires roll over maxtrax, and once you gain traction, you have recovered.  You may not need winching or towing.  Ingenious yeah, Mate?

No need for jacks? or shovels, and you can recover alone using your own vehicles power. It works well in sand, mud and snow too.

Tread Lightly was the buzz word of Off Roading then

The equivalent of the Save the Planet, Save Mother earth for the 4x4 off roaders then, was "Tread Lightly"  But that could be a misnomer if you are driving a 2 ton 4x4, SUV, or pick up.  The treading destroys the vegetation, creates more muck, and destroys water life in river crossing.  The vehicles  oil and additives pollute the rivers, the trails and may even frighten the birds and the animals.

To successfully negotiate the natures obstacles:   rocks, waterways, sand, mud require different strategies and modes of travel.

Rockcrawling is slow and really treading lightly.

Water crossing is determined by the water bed:   waterways with large rocks require slow driving.  Those lined up with sand require fast driving;  you must literally float on the sand with your horizontal speed (say 50 to 60 kph) and that is not treading lightly.  Wet sand is vicious.  Talk to the guys who went to Pinatubo after heavy rains.  Sometime 3 vehicles towing one another get stuck

Driving across sand:  desert and beach.  You have to drive fast - really fast. The Paris Dakar route in Saharas require the driver to run at 100 kph or more or else they get bogged down and extrication slows them down

Driving up a river bank requires momentum and a lot of velocity.  It does not conform to treading lightly.  Comments anyone?
