Car vs wild - some ingenious tactics in off roading
I learn a lot from this car vs wild episodes at Discovery Channel. The main protagonists here are Bill Wu and and Gary Humphrey. Take this river crossing for instance using empty drums.
Some ingenious solutions:
1. The Jeep's engine took in water. There is a danger of hydro lock and wrecking the connecting rods and the engine. Solution: remove the spark plugs and have the engine spew out the water from the spark plug socket holes. To finally remove the water, Bill put in tequila in cylinder and incinerated the same to vaporize the water. The engine finally restarted. Wow.
2. There was an almost 45 degree drop and could not go down further without endanger the vehicle falling off the steep grade. Solution: Bill removed the two rear wheels, had them dragged as anchor. The friction of the rear drums slowed down their descent. wow again
3. There was a scene too where the Ruby was tilted dangerously to a dangerous side (drop off to a river) after the Ruby slipped or made the wrong turn. The vehicle was righted through an ingenious system of pulleys and straps. About winching, we were advised not to anchor to trees. But when your life is in danger, you forget about the trees - you watch our for your survival

How does the Land Rover Disco fare vs the 3.2 L Ranger Wildtrax?
The Ranger Wildrax has 3.2 liter engine which packs 200 HP. A Wild Trax would cost about P1.6 million and Disco about 2x that amount. We do not know much about the Disco but I guess it is very very expensive and packs plenty of latest engine electronix: traction control ABS.
The Wildtrax struggle on the off road obstacle. The Disco does not. So what is the verdict? Land Rove is still the best?
But that is comparing apples and oranges. The price of a Disco is 4x than that of a Ranger. Here is the Rader Comparison
